Dmitry Suslov: BRICS Is Shaping a New Model of Global Governance

The BRICS International School: New Generation featured an expert interview with Dmitry Suslov, Deputy Director of the Centre for Comprehensive European and International Studies (CCEIS) under the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs at HSE University. The session was moderated by journalist and interviewer Valeriia Popova.

The discussion centred on the dynamics of global politics and the search for new forms of global engagement amid rising uncertainty. According to Dmitry Suslov, the contemporary international system is experiencing a prolonged phase of "global disorder," characterised by multipolarity, multiple actors, and growing civilisational diversity. Unlike previous eras, current international relations involve numerous independent players whose interests frequently diverge, making universal rules unattainable.

The expert noted that in this context, the United States continues to pursue a strategy of maintaining dominance though its capacity to confront multiple power centres at the same time has significantly weakened. This leads to deepening internal polarisation and ideological tension, expressed, among other ways, in phenomena such as "cancel culture" and the crisis of the West’s liberal identity.

Suslov emphasised that the emerging world order will be not only multipolar but also multicivilisational—for the first time in the history of international relations. This reality makes a return to previous models of global governance impossible and demands the creation of new, more flexible forms of interaction.

Concluding the session, Dmitry Suslov underscored that BRICS' further evolution will depend on its ability not only to maintain internal balance but also to propose new global principles of cooperation based on mutual respect and a fair distribution of opportunities.
